Bandung is my home town, I was born here and i really love this city. Bandung is one of metropolitan city in Indonesia, besides Jakarta and Surabaya. If you visit Bandung, you will find many uniqueness, like the panorama, historical buildings, shopping, good culinary, and friendly people. Bandung has a cool climate, especially in northern Bandung. Also many good universities are here, like Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Padjajaran University (UNPAD), Catholic Parahyangan University (UNPAR), Indonesia University of Education (UPI), and many more...

Residency Program

Kupu Keramik Studio / my workshop in Bandung, Indonesia open to the ceramic artists international to resident in my place for 4-8 weeks. No restrictions on age, nationality and gender.

My workshop provide facility which related with ceramic activities, such as materials and work space (free). But for accommodating, meals are the artist responsibility.

The ceramic categories could be anything, as art or function, traditional or contemporary.

The result will be exhibited in the gallery that I have agreement with them.

Statment

Generally my ideas come from the surrounding nature. I live in a country that has beautiful landscape like sea, mountain, rice field, hills, etc. Urban issues are also another of my consideration. Generally the works are represented by description of the above.
My recent works have zoom in zoom out principal. Like if you see something from a very close distance (zoom in) or you see something from far away distance such as you are in the plane and look down (zoom out). You may just look a simple geometrical forms, like lines, curved, rounded, triangle, square, ellipse, etc through the change of depth and distance. If you see my works, I hope you would perceive such sensations.

Kupu Keramik alias Butterfly ceramic studio was established in 2000. In the beginning this studio / workshop used various techniques for the products, such as pinching, coiling, slabbing, throwing, and slip casting. Since 2004 the workshop had been focusing in casting, but we still occasionally make products from other techniques. In daily activities We make tableware and ceramic interior in limited edition for custom order. Besides making orders, as owner I also make some art works. Recently I made an object theme, configured by modules of cube in certain numbers and displayed on the wall.

Jatiwangi Artists in Residence Festival (JARF) was held in 2010. Jatiwangi is some place in West Java province, Indonesia. This program was initiated by JAF (Jatiwangi Art Factory) community. The participants are from various artist backgrounds, such as ceramic artist,s video artists, painters, performance artists, traditional dancers, and musicians. The participants not only came from Indonesia, but also US, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, and Srilanka. The Indonesian artists were represented from various cities, like Bandung, Jakarta, dan Yogya. From Bandung by me and Nurdian Ichsan (lecturer of faculty of Art and Design ITB). We all stay in the home residents, mostly one family for one artist. We stayed there for 2 weeks and made art works by collaborating with the people in the village.
The theme of our art works is "action". We made basic forms from local clay. Generally we used 2 basic forms i.e. cylinder and bowl and produced 50 wares in total. When they were still in the wet condition, the wares received treatments of action from people in the village. Every person who selected must do something to the wares. We didn't restrict the age or profession of village people in this "action". It is up to someone to hit, squeeze, push, or anything they liked to the wares so the last form would be totally deformed.
When all of the wares had received the various actions, this collaboration art was exhibited in the village hall.
