Modular Dualism

These are my latest works (2015). I made modules configuration into figure object. The idea was inspired by rubin vase picture (the ambiguity of face or vase). The picture was very popular for gestalt psychologist at that time.

The form concept is still positive and negative. The concept had been using in last 7 years. If you see the pictures looks same (optical illusion), but if you getting closer there are positive and negative modules. Earlier I used only 2 types of modules, this works used 12 modules. The main shape is collaborating prism and cube. If you look from front just see 2 types of triangle, 2 types of parallelogram, and 2 types of square.

Jakarta Contemporary Ceramic Biennale #3

Jakarta Contemporary Ceramic Biennale  (JCCB), an international contemporary art even, holds its third edition from September to October 2014. Works are now classified into three groups: art, design, craft and tradition. Curators Asmudjo J. Irianto and Rifky Effendy chose the theme COEFFICIENT EXPANSION, as a metaphor of the most recent developments of ceramic art praxis that have become more extensive.

The paragraph above is an introduce of Nia Gautama in catalogue of JCCB #3. If curious you can read the catalogue in pdf file.

Positive and Negative

This is my latest work telling about positive and negative. Today, good and evil hard to make differences. If you see the artwork from certain angles and distances it will look same module.

Actually there are two group modules on the right and left sides. The right side is positive module (cube and pyramid +) and the left side is negative module (cube and pyramid -). The dimension are height 5 cm, width 5 cm, depth 5-7 cm. I use the zirconia glaze which have temperature 1230 degree celsius.

Experiment with Glazes

I tried to modify the glazes effect by combining of two colors of glazes. It had a satisfactory results. The application techniques are dipping and spraying. But the effect was little bit unpredictable because it depends the feel factor when you glazing. Different in thick of glazes make the result will be different.

To make rough textures of glazes don't use the spray gun, you just can use the simple manual spraying for killing the insect. Do not spray evenly for a good results.

Trying Make a Sculptural Ceramic

This was my new configuration of modules. Usually I configured the modules on wall like a "painting". For refreshment, I tried making a sculptural ceramic. The work have length 19 cm., height 15 cm., and width 5 cm. Another difference is the kind of clay I used. The kind is red earthenware clay which have temperature 900-1100 celsius degree and not to be glazed.
